Small Charity Week: How SELFA makes a big difference for children in North Yorkshire
Posted: 22nd June 2026

This Small Charity Week, we wanted to shine a light on the big difference we make in the lives of children, young people and families across Skipton, Craven and North Yorkshire.
Over the past year, SELFA has supported 763 children, young people, parents and carers.
An average of 196 children and young people came through our doors every single week.
Thanks to our holiday provision, 398 children and young people accessed holiday activities.
But our impact is about much more than just numbers.
Why small charities matter
One of the many things we do is provide one-to-one mentoring sessions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health needs, delivered by trained counsellors in a safe and supportive environment.
Mark, age 5, was referred to the Mighty Minds programme by his school following a difficult period at home and a noticeable decline in his emotional wellbeing. He received six in-school mentoring sessions.
At first, he struggled to engage, but through therapeutic play, creative activities, and mindfulness techniques, he gradually became more comfortable expressing his emotions.
After 6 weeks, Mark was eager to attend sessions and showed clear improvements in emotional regulation and communication. Both school staff and SELFA observed positive changes, with Mark better able to identify and share his feelings, recover more quickly from distress and participate more positively in school life.
His teacher praised his progress and sought further information about support for other pupils.
For SELFA staff, one of the greatest strengths of a small charity is the ability to see the direct impact of their work.
“What I love about working for a small charity is being able to see the direct difference our support makes in young people’s lives and knowing you’ve played a part in that journey.“
– Sally Marchant-Derrick, senior programme manager of SELFA Youth Voice and SEND
“Small charities are so special because of the team that they assemble. Everyone working in the same mindset to produce the best outcomes we can, especially for the young people and families that our charity supports.“
– Michaela Jacques, SELFA children and young people’s worker
Supporting parents and families
Our work supports parents and carers too.
One parent who attended our former group for dads, told us: “SELFA created a space where parents feel able to share their experiences, access support and build resilience. The sessions made a meaningful and positive difference.”
Every number represents a child, young person or family receiving the support they need. This Small Charity Week, we’re proud of the difference we’re making together and grateful to everyone who helps make it possible.
