May 3rd-9th Highlights

Last week at SELFA, we had a visit from the newly elected High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, Venetia. The High Sheriff spent last week travelling around the county meeting people that help our community to thrive and SELFA were honoured that she chose to visit us. Venetia met up with the SELFA Staff and our Youth Council to discuss SELFA in more detail. We all had a great time meeting the High Sheriff and hope she comes back soon.

SELFA Thrive did a session all about water safety. The children came up with great advice to keep safe around water including: “No running”, “Don’t be silly” and “Check the depth if you’re going swimming”. We then decorated some pebbles that we are now going to place along the canal to remind people to be safe around water!

SELFA Engage took part in a mindfulness activity where we listened to music and drew how it made us feel. This really helped us to focus on the music that we were listening to. We also took part in our 3rd Karate session and enjoyed eating pancakes together!

SELFA Starters went out and about for the first time as group! The children walked very sensibly to the nearby park and were able to cross the road safely by looking and listening for dangers. The children had a blast at the park and their imagination ran wild with Jaden becoming a pirate captain for the evening.

Smile project were busy yesterday making cards and little gifts for elderly people in our community. They all spent their time decorating a recycled, handmade envelope and popped a sweet treat inside. The group recognised that this last year has been tricky for everyone including older people and wanted to do something to make them smile.

SELFA Active played dodgeball and came up with different ways that we can keep our mind and bodies healthy. Caitlin was our first star of the week, it was her birthday and she kindly brought in sweets for everyone to enjoy with her. Another Star of the week from Active was Josh who won a chocolate bar for his heroics in dodgeball but decided to then share it with himself and three friends. One friend said “it made my day”!

Saturday club had a ‘happy day’, they created feelings monsters, made fruit kebabs and created sensory bottles out of glitter, baby oil, water and food colouring. They felt super nice to shake and to see all of the colours and glitter move around the bottle was amazing too.

SELFA Youth took to the outdoors in their best session yet. The young people in the group paired up with a friend and made shelters out of rope and tarpaulin to take shelter from the cool weather. They also learned how to make s’mores out in the wilderness. They started by sharping a twig with a special knife; learning the safest technique to ensure that they did not hurt themselves.  The group then practiced starting fires using a flint before putting their s’mores together on their sharpened sticks. The results were incredible and every young person enjoyed their snack!
